Postdoctoral Scientist Position in Microbial Physiology/Biogeochemistry
The Girguis lab at Harvard University invites applications for an NSF-funded 2-year postdoctoral research position in microbial ecological physiology (with an option of a third year renewal). The primary research focus is on better understanding the rates and physiological capacities of microbes recovered from the deep subsurface biosphere. This involves the development and operation of bioreactors to reconstruct geochemical conditions found in situ, the use of bioelectrochemical systems to interrogate select microbial processes, and the use of genomic and proteomic analyses to interrogate physiological responses to environmental conditions. Experience and competence in bioreactor and analytical instrument operation is required. Extensive experience in microbiological methods, in high-throughput metagenomic sequencing and analyses, and proteomics is essential. Experience in electrochemical techniques (e.g. cyclic voltammetry) is preferred but not necessary. The successful candidate will work closely with research groups in the Dept. of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (home department) as well as colleagues at the Marine Biological Labs and the University of Hawaii. Some travel may be required, though the frequency and duration are negotiable.
Applicants should send application materials (resume, publication list, statement of research interests) and the names and contact information for three references to Dr. Peter Girguis (). A PhD in a related field is required at the time of appointment. This position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. This research is funded through the NSF and independent Harvard funds. Harvard University is an equal opportunity employer.
Graduate Student Opportunities
We are looking for select graduate students that are interested in conducting research on marine microbiology and physiology. For more information, please email Professor Peter Girguis. Thank you.
