I was born and raised in Norway. I got my BSc in biology from the University of Oslo and then did my MSc and PhD at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. In my MSc work I did taxonomy and systematics within the insect order Diptera, focusing on morphology of fungus gnats (Mycetophilidae). In my PhD work I moved to the molecular world and another group of insects ñ cave crickets (Rhaphidophoridae). In this work I did phylogeny and biogeography based on mitochondrial DNA markers and molecular evolution of satellite DNA (tandemly repeated DNA sequences).
I'm interested in the role of repetitive DNA in the genome, specifically tandemly repeated sequences, gene expression, and the interaction between the two. I am also interested in the role of RNA in the regulation of gene expression, and phenotypic differences between populations and species due to gene regulation.

Yoga, yogic breathing exercises and meditation are hobbies that have become an important part of my daily routine. I also teach these techniques through an NGO called the Art of Living Foundation. Dancing is also an important part of my life, as well as biking and spending time in nature, especially Norwegian nature:-)
