My research investigates how demographic and competitive processes within terrestrial plant communities affect large-scale ecosystem dynamics. I've worked on the development of a new terrestrial biosphere model - the ecosystem demography model (ED). ED uses moment approximations to capture the large-scale behavior of a stochastic, ‘individual-based’ model of ecosystem dynamics. I am using the model to investigate how the dynamics of fine ‘sub-grid’ scale heterogeneity govern the large-scale structure and distribution of terrestrial ecosystems, biogeochemical cycling and biosphere-atmosphere interactions. I'm also
continuing my research on animal movement. I
am currently finishing a book on this subject with Mark
Lewis, entitled ‘Mechanistic home range models: from individual
behavior to large-scale pattern’. |
