**Naomi Pierce** joins economists and biologists from Harvard University, University of Toronto and University of East Anglia to co-author a new paper in [Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences](http://www.pnas.org/content/107/36/15712.full?sid=9e23d98d-ed8a-4331-8aa0-e9a7018499d7), suggesting that the mutually beneficial relationships that species create are maintained because of simple self-interest.
