How did a jellyfish become the world’s most efficient swimmer? This seminar will discuss these topics and more with an emphasis on understanding important processes within plankton communities as well as quantifying small-scale locomotion in order learn from nature and inform the future engineering of underwater vehicles.  Brad Gemmell, Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary marine biologist whose research specializes in both classical approaches and the use of novel 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional high speed microcinematography techniques such as digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV), Tomographic PIV and holographic cinematography to answer ecologically relevant questions regarding marine organism interactions with their surrounding fluid environment.</p>
