The developmental basis of biological diversity

Abstract: The Mallarino lab is broadly interested in uncovering the genetic and developmental mechanisms responsible for establishing phenotypic traits, as well as understanding how these processes have evolved over time to generate the remarkable phenotypic diversity observed in nature. In this talk, Dr. Mallarino will describe recent work aimed at understanding the origin of evolutionary innovations in mammalian skin. He will discuss how the lab is using a variety of approaches, including experimental embryology, transcriptomics, comparative genomics, and development of functional tools, to uncover gene function and understand how phenotypic novelty is generated at the molecular level.
