Getting Around Harvard

Getting Around Harvard

The FAS is comprised of over two hundred and fifty buildings, making up ten million gross square feet. That includes residential, instructional, laboratory, library, administrative, athletic, theatrical, and dining facilities.

Most of the FAS buildings are in the Cambridge and Boston area, but FAS also has departments and units elsewhere, such as in Petersham, MA; Washington, DC; Johannesburg, South Africa; and New Delhi, India.

Finding your way around the FAS and Harvard Square can seem intimidating, but there are some helpful resources available.

  • OEB Campus Map. You can find OEB labs in several buildings around the Harvard campus including: BioLabs, Herbaria, MCZ, MCZ Labs, Northwest Building, Arnold Arboretum, Concord Field Station, and Harvard Forest.
  • Harvard University Campus Map. This interactive map allows users to search for academic and administrative buildings, labs, auditoriums, athletic facilities, houses, and more.
  • Harvard Square Website. Learn more about the neighborhood surrounding Harvard’s campus, including places to eat, local events, and non-Harvard parking information.
  • Harvard University Dining Services - Cafes. All cafes are open to all members of the Harvard community and their accompanied guests.
  • Transportation:
    • Harvard offers free shuttle services around the campus area and to and from the Longwood campus.
    • Harvard offers commuting and parking discounts (including bike, carpool and half price MBTA). Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, or locally known as the "T") is an easy way of getting around Cambridge, Boston, and to and from Logan airport. The MBTA offers subway, bus, commuter rail, and boat service. Harvard University is located on the Red Line and these bus routes. Harvard University offers ID holders an excellent deal for monthly bus and train passes, currently subsidizing 50% of the cost of a CharlieCard (MBTA-wide reusable pass).  Visit Harvard Transportation & Parking CommuterChoice for information on how to order your pass.
