Work/Life Benefits

Work/Life Benefits

Harvard offers many other benefits to help with work/life balance. These benefits include the following:

  • Transportation
    • Harvard offers free shuttle services around the campus area and to and from the Longwood campus.
    • Harvard also offers commuting and parking discounts (including bike, carpool and half price MBTA).
    • Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, or locally known as the "T") is an easy way of getting around Cambridge, Boston, and to and from Logan airport. The MBTA offers subway, bus, commuter rail, and boat service. Harvard University is located on the Red Line and these bus routes. Harvard University offers ID holders an excellent deal for monthly bus and train passes, currently subsidizing 50% of the cost of a CharlieCard (MBTA-wide reusable pass).  Visit Harvard Transportation & Parking CommuterChoice for information on how to order your pass.
  • Childcare - Harvard offers several resources to help with childcare including six on-campus child care centers. The FAS Office of Postdoctoral Affairs also offers information for childcare for postdocs.
  • Recreation - With a Harvard Recreation membership you will have access to Harvard athletic facilities featuring fitness equipment, pools, group courses (including virtual classes), and racquetball and tennis/squash courts. Rates for internal postdocs are reasonably low at $24/annual for single membership, and $124/annual for family membership. Stipendiary postdocs are considered affiliates and are charged $150/annual for single membership, and $300/annual for family membership.
  • Entertainment - Harvard's Outings & Innings (O&I) offers a dynamic menu of date-specific tickets for a variety of performing arts and professional sports, as well as "anyday" tickets for movies, museums and seasonal attractions. O&I also partners with cultural attractions and businesses to offer special Harvard University ID discounts. O&I provides significant savings on many offerings, access to high-demand events and no hefty transaction fees! A HarvardKey is required to set up a customer account and to receive O&I’s E-List of upcoming events and special offers.
